BBN-Obit-Hank Aaron
ATLANTA - His name is all over the baseball record book and, indeed, Hank Aaron could do it all. Sure, he's remembered mostly for dethroning the Babe to become baseball's home run king on the way to 755, but don't forget about the .300 average, or the graceful way he fielded his position, or the deceiving speed he showed on the basepaths. Aaron died Friday. He was 86. By Paul Newberry. SENT: 3000 words, photos, video. An Abridged version has also moved.
BBN--Paul Newberry-Aaron Appreciation
ATLANTA - If anything, Hank Aaron was underappreciated for much of his career. Exiled far from the media spotlight - first in Milwaukee, then in Atlanta - the Hammer went about his business in baffling obscurity compared to the other stars of his era, such as Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle. It was only late in his career, as Aaron set his sights on perhaps the most hallowed record in American sports, that so much of the country finally seemed to recognize the greatness they'd been overlooking. By Paul Newberry. UPCOMING.
BBN--Obit-Hank Aaron-Reaction
Reaction to Hank Aaron's death from former presidents and fellow Hall of Famers followed a theme: how the one-time home run king handled the racism he faced on the way to passing Babe Ruth's hallowed record nearly 50 years ago. UPCOMING: 350 words, photos.
